How clean is clean?

Filtration is not one thing — it is a ladder. How far up it you climb decides what is left in the glass.

“Filtered” is one of the most reassuring words on a label — and one of the least precise. Filtration is not a single thing you either do or do not. It is a ladder, and how far up it you climb decides what is left in the glass.

The lower rungs

The first rungs deal with what you can see and taste. A sediment stage catches grit, rust and fine particles. An activated-carbon stage removes chlorine and the compounds that carry odour and taste, so the water reads as clean on the tongue. A great deal of “filtered water” stops here — and for many everyday purposes, that is enough.

But clean to the eye and tongue is not the same as clean to the milligram. Dissolved substances — those that have gone fully into solution — slip straight through these stages. They leave no colour, no cloudiness, no taste to warn you.

The finer rungs

Climb higher and the openings shrink. Micro- and ultra-fine stages catch progressively smaller particles and much of what is biologically alive. Tighter still — yet dissolved solids, already broken down to the molecular scale, remain small enough to keep passing.

The top of the ladder

Reverse osmosis sits at the very top of the ladder, and it is where MOMA chose to stand. Our membrane works at 0.0001 micron — a threshold so fine that, in practice, essentially only the water molecule itself gets through. At that scale the things coarser stages cannot reach are finally held back: dissolved solids, heavy metals, and the contaminants modern testing has taught us to look for, from “forever chemicals” to microplastic fragments. What comes through is close to water and almost nothing else — which is exactly what MOMA’s near-zero TDS describes.

Two things separate a rung on the ladder from a promise kept. The first is how far you go: MOMA takes every batch to near-zero and publishes the figure. The second is whether anyone is watching: our line is monitored in real time, parameter by parameter, so the standard is not a claim made once but a result proven on every run.

A choice, kept

Every water makes a decision about where to stop climbing. MOMA’s is simply to go all the way — reverse osmosis on every batch, taken to near-zero, with nothing added back. It is the same conviction that runs through everything we make: water’s job is to be clean, consistent and clear, and nutrition belongs on your plate, where it can be measured.

“Filtered” can mean almost anything. This is what it means to us: the top of the ladder, every time.
