Ten years of clarity
MOMA turns ten this year. The most radical thing about the decade is how little we allowed to change.
Ten years ago, in 2016, the first faceted MOMA bottle left Sibu. On its specification sheet was a number — total dissolved solids, taken to near-zero — and a decade later that number reads exactly the same: < 5 mg/L. Brands usually mark an anniversary by counting what grew. We find ourselves counting what did not move.
The plant came before the brand
MOMA was built in an unusual order. The facility came first — begun in 2012, fully operational by 2015 — and only when the line could hold the standard did the brand follow in 2016. South-East Asia’s first fully-automated sterile-fill plant, moulding and camera-inspecting its own bottles, was not a scale-up plan. It was a precondition. We decided what the water had to be, then built the only kind of place that could keep that promise on every batch.
The water travelled
Within a year the bottle crossed its first border — Singapore in 2017 — and then kept going: China and Japan in 2018, Brunei in 2019, Australia after that. Six markets, one standard, the same near-zero water in each of them. Along the way it found the company it was made for: a Japan Hand Drip Champion who endorsed it in 2017, the finest kitchens in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, and — from 2023 to 2025 — three editions of the Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur & Penang, with MOMA as Official Water Partner.
“The strategy, it turns out, was simply to hold the standard long enough for the right people to notice.”
What a decade proves
Anyone can hit a number once. The only honest proof of a standard is time — batch after batch, season after season, market after market, without a single quiet compromise. That is what the first ten years were for. The bottle is still a square prism cut with 160 facets. The water is still taken to near-zero, still finished with nothing left behind. The tagline is still four words long.
The second decade will reach further — deeper into the markets we already serve, and to tables we have not yet met. But it will still be the same purity, the same shape, the same words. That is the point of us. A moment of clarity, held for ten years; the next ten are the same promise, kept longer.
