The future of water is what is not in it

PFAS, microplastics, and a generation learning to ask a harder question of every bottle.

For most of modern history, the question we asked of drinking water was simple: is it safe? Increasingly, a more demanding question is taking its place: what, exactly, is in it?

The rise of so-called “forever chemicals” — PFAS — and the steady accumulation of microplastics in the environment have changed the conversation. These are not contaminants you can taste or see. They are the kind that reward a process built to remove what the eye cannot detect.

Why the membrane matters

Reverse osmosis at 0.0001 micron is not a marketing flourish. It is a threshold fine enough that, in practice, only the water molecule passes. The defence against the contaminants of the future is much the same as the defence against the contaminants of the past: take the water down to as close to nothing-but-water as engineering allows.

The cleanest possible water is the one that has had the most removed from it — not the most added.

A standard, held

MOMA water meets the Malaysian Food Regulations 1985 standard, and is held there on every batch — watched continuously by Japanese-engineered online monitoring, without pause. We publish our own numbers, and the most telling one is how little is left in the water at all.

The future of water will be defined less by where it came from and more by what was taken out of it. On that measure, the work is already done — and never stops.
