Why the bottle is square
A dinner, a default, and a decision — the story of the square prism, and everything the industry gave up by staying round.
The proportions of the MOMA bottle were not decided on a drawing board. They were decided at a hotel dinner, the moment a tall bottle tipped over as a guest reached across for the lazy Susan — the way tall bottles do once a table gets busy. The answer was not a wider base or a warning. It was less height.
Tall is a habit
Bottled water is tall and round almost everywhere, and it is worth asking why. Tall looks bigger on a shelf — a well-documented trick of perception in which height reads as volume. Round is what every filling line is built for: a cylinder spins through the machinery in any orientation, no alignment, no fuss, maximum speed. Neither answer has anything to do with the person actually holding the bottle. They are the industry’s answers, not the drinker’s.
Square is a decision
A square prism has to be turned, registered and handled to a finer tolerance on the line — slower by design, which is precisely why almost nobody makes one. We make our own bottles, so we could choose the harder shape and build the line to run it. What the line gives up, the object gains.
A square packs tight where a cylinder cannot: roughly twenty percent of every case of round bottles is simply air between them, where square prisms nest almost flush — up to a fifth more water in the same shipping space. And a short, square bottle behaves differently in the hand and in the world: it sits low on a crowded table and stays put; it drops into a handbag, not only a tote; it rests in a car console without fouling the gear shift; it is compact enough for an airline service tray.

A default is only a decision no one remembered to make
The 160 facets catch the light, and people assume the shape is for beauty. The truth is closer to the way we make the water: we questioned an inherited default, paid the real cost of the better answer, and kept the reasons where you can read them. The bottle is square for the same reason the water is empty of everything but water — because someone decided, and held the decision.
